A year ago I put out what became my biggest parody—I Just Need Some Space. I was stunned by it's success. To date it's had over 15 million views on YouTube and other sites. It was trending on PopSugar with over 3 million views and nearly a million shares in a few days. It was on the news. It was insane!
I loved All About That Bass and really wanted to parody it, but couldn't think of an idea. Then one afternoon my friend Jacquie was standing in my kitchen and said, “What about I need my space?” LIGHTBULBS! It was the most brilliant idea ever.
I turned it into “I Just Need Some Space” and Jacquie helped me write the lyrics. We set a shoot date, but an hour before, Jacquie bailed. She's a lawyer and she had to go to work and honestly I don't think she trusted that wouldn't make her shake her booty in ways that would damage her career. (I wouldn't have! Promise. Well … maybe a little.)
I didn't want to call off the shoot. My friend Abbey was on her way over and I had already done my hair and makeup (which any mom knows is a huge PITA!). So I went to drop my kids off at school, all the while wondering what on earth to do, when I saw my friend Hillary.
I sidled up to her.
“Heyyyyy!!!! How are you Hill?” I said.
“I'm fine,” she looked at me a little suspiciously. “What's up?”
“You wouldn't happen to want to be in a video would you?” I asked.
“When?” she said.
I never thought I'd be picking up moms in the school drop off line, but it worked. Hillary probably sensed my desperation and took pity on me. She and Abbey and I all piled into my daughter's room to take advantage of the pretty lavender wall, set the camera up on a tripod and had the time of our lives trying to mimic Meghan Trainor's awesome dance moves. It was sort of pathetic to be honest, but we finally got one good take. That's the beauty of video, it only takes one take!
A few days of huddling in my playroom/guest room/office editing and voila—the video was done! I uploaded it never expecting the madness that followed. But it was a fun ride!
Thank you all for watching! None of this would have happen without you! I am eternally grateful for all the support. But you know that.
